A Sloth’s Journey - Part One

One of the most unique and fascinating creatures on our planet, the Sloth has grown in popularity as a “favorite” among animal lovers. And at our Folsom SeaQuest our gentle and loving two-toed sloth, Perry, is more than just a favorite. She and her baby, Sydney, have come a long way since they first arrived here. This has been a tough year for most everyone, but Perry’s journey to becoming a new mom and her postpartum experience will tug at anyone’s heartstrings.

We began to notice Perry had been gaining weight...

In September of 2019, our animal care team became a bit concerned when they saw that Perry was putting on some extra weight, despite her very controlled diet. At the time, our Vet felt it was normal and that Perry may need more exercise. As months progressed, we just knew something was not right. Then on December 30th, our morning team was making their rounds and saw something in Perry’s exhibit that shouldn’t be there. In the middle of the night, a new baby sloth was born! We named the baby Sydney, in honor of the fires that were ravaging Australia at the time. It turns out Perry had been pregnant all along, and our former Vet wasn’t aware. Wanting to get the best health care for Perry and baby Sydney, we immediately sought new veterinary services - and found Dr. Samantha Ford, who was a wonderful addition to our SeaQuest family.

New mama sloth Perry (left), and baby sloth Sydney (right)

She couldn’t move her legs or grip onto anything....

Months later, SeaQuest Folsom was closed due to the CoVid 19 shutdown across the country. Again, during a morning check, we saw Perry up in her basket with little Sydney, but she didn’t look quite right. Her eyes seemed glossed over, her arms were flailing and she couldn’t move on her own at all. We immediately called Dr. Ford, who rushed over to do an examination. When she arrived, Perry was distressed but Dr. Ford gave her fluids and vitamins. With little outward signs of injury, Dr. Ford felt the best thing would be to take Perry and baby Sydney to the clinic for observation for the next few days. In case something were to happen, she would have immediate medical care.

Perry in surgery

We had little hope that she would survive....

That week Perry’s condition worsened and the outlook was grim. Dr. Ford was very concerned about her disorientation, inability to eat, and severe lethargy. She began to have minor tremors in her muscles (no seizures, thankfully) but no grip in her hands, and within days no movement in her limbs.  We were so worried we would lose her. Dr. Ford said the only option to give any chance for survival would be to give Perry a feeding tube. Typically, these types of surgeries for animals like Perry are extremely risky. We had little hope she would survive just the anesthesia. However, we learned she did great! Perry’s long road ahead with a feeding tube would be hard for her, for little baby Sydney, and for her SeaQuest family who were desperately hoping both mommy and baby would be back home soon. Stay tuned for Part Two!

The Secret Threat of Overfishing

Marine life around the world is facing a rapid epidemic. It’s a challenge that could have dire consequences if not resolved immediately. Worst of all, it’s a problem that has been caused by humans; and there are no signs of slowing down. The issue I’m referring to is the impact of global overfishing.

Fishing and traditional commercial fishing isn’t necessarily bad for the environment. In fact, fishing helps control fluctuations in aquatic life. It’s an essential part of keeping the world’s marine ecosystem in line. But, fishing and commercial fishing can become adverse when they incorporate overfishing tendencies. So that begs the question, what exactly is overfishing, and why is it so harmful?

What is Overfishing?

According to National Geographic, “Overfishing is simply the taking of wildlife from the sea at rates too high for fished species to replace themselves.” Several aquatic species have been victims of this treacherous method of fishing. Some include:

Because of overfishing, these sea creatures have either come close to extinction or are currently on the brink of extinction. In fact, 5% of the world's fish species are currently in danger of extinction. The damage overfishing causes can have long-term effects on marine life and humankind as well.

How Does Overfishing Affect Humans?

Cultural cuisines range from a variety of dishes. Many include chicken, pork, beef, and especially fish as the primary animal protein. With over 7 billion people on the planet, fish consumption accounts for over 15% of the population. In several regions around the world, fish is the only affordable option. This is where it gets messy!

Overfishing has caused the market price for fish to skyrocket for the 15% that consume it. The reason for this is because fish populations cannot reproduce fast enough to meet consumer demand. With fewer aquatic options, the more expensive and rare they become to consumers. This makes it difficult for impoverished countries to afford and maintain a healthy diet.  But not only does overfishing directly affect an individual’s wallet, but it cripples an entire economy.

Roughly 820 million people are employed by a fishing, fish packaging, or fish associated organization. When standard fishing practices become aggressive overfishing methods, several of these employees are at risk of losing their jobs. It’s estimated that $50 billion is lost yearly because of this epidemic. As tragic as these facts are, it’s the environment that is taking much punishment.

How Does Overfishing Affect the Environment?

Our oceans and seas are suffering because of overfishing. Every aquatic creature plays a delicate and significant role in keeping the world’s ecosystem balanced. When one species of fish is affected by overfishing, the whole marine ecosystem feels its loss. Some examples of environmental effects include:

Again, these are just some examples of the devastation of overfishing. It’s a problem that can no longer be ignored. It needs to be stopped, but how?

How Can You Stop Overfishing?

Believe it or not, you can play a role in stopping the practice of overfishing. Environmental laws and regulations need to be put in place to control the rate of fishing worldwide. Encourage friends and family to read this piece and support organizations trying to implement steps to make these laws come to life. Also, continue to educate yourself about different sea life forms like The Six Types Of Sharks That Call SeaQuest Home or The Magical Moon Jellyfish.

Lastly, visit SeaQuest Littleton,Colorado to learn more about aquatic life’s delicacies. While you’re there, learn about the SeaQuse Cares initiative, which tackles several wildlife issues, including overfishing.

The Stunning & Colorful Macaw Parrot

Probably the most recognizable breed of parrot in the world is the macaw parrot. Known for their long tail and colorful feathers, they are easy to spot at SeaQuest Littleton, Colorado. Unfortunately, many species of this vivid feathered friend might be at risk of extinction, so see the macaws in our SeaQuest specialists’ loving care and read below to learn more about the fantastic macaw.

Bright Colors & Even Brighter Personalities of the Macaw Bird

This social bird is known not only for its large size, being the largest of all parrots, but also for its recognizable voice. The macaw can be heard calling with their loud screeches, and some have been known to mimic sounds, so they might just be saying hello! This, combined with their entertaining demeanor, has led to many macaws being domesticated and kept as pets. Just like other pets, macaws are known to have different personalities, likes, and dislikes!

However, owning a macaw can be extremely challenging. The large size of macaws presents a challenge, being that they are usually between two and 4 feet long! Another challenge is that due to their specific personalities, many macaws that are not regularly handled or lack mental stimulation can become destructive, territorial, or aggressive. The macaw needs regular activity, stimulation, and attention to thrive in an environment. Owning a macaw is a big commitment since some live an average of 60 years, and some have been recorded to live up to 80 years!

EGG-sellent Facts About the Macaw Parrot

The macaw is a fascinating and beautiful bird, so we know these facts will have you squawking!

Risk of Extinction: Dangers That the Macaw Parrot Faces

The colorful feathers of the macaw have attracted the attention of humans throughout history. In pre-Columbian civilizations, the macaw’s feathers were often traded as currency, used as adornment, and used to create textiles. This bird is a special part of history but has faced severe dangers in present times.

A majority of macaw species are threatened with extinction or are endangered. In fact, over five species are already extinct! The Cuban macaw, Dominican macaw, Jamaican green and yellow macaws, and Guadeloupe macaws are already extinct. Considered a threatened species, they are essential subjects of conservation. The main issues paving the way to extinction for the macaw are illegal trapping of macaws for the pet trade, the rising rate of deforestation in their ecosystem, and hunting. Although some macaws are kept as pets, most breeds are targets of poachers for the exotic bird trade.

See & Interact with the Stunning Macaw

SeaQuest is home to a variety of macaws. The scarlet macaw, the blue and gold macaw, and the green wing macaw are just a few of our feathery friends that call SeaQuest home—interested in something a bit more aquatic? This may come as a surprise, but Doctor Fish is not the scientific name for these little creatures. In fact, they are known as Gara rufa and are native to subtropical parts of Western Asia. They received the surname “Doctor Fish” for their tendency to feed on the dead skin cells on people's feet. They were integrated into spa treatments in the early 2000s and have provided natural exfoliation since.

Wild and Domestic: Bengal Cats and Kittens at SeaQuest

Majestic, agile, and playful; these are just some of the qualities that define the Bengal Cat. But did you know there’s more to the history of this paw-some creature?

Bengal Cats are a cross between domestic and Asian Leopard Cats; this classifies them as a hybrid breed. These gorgeous felines typically have a gold coat with a mix of unique markings, including spots and arrowheads. Although they are a hybrid breed, Bengal Cats are considered domesticated when they are 4-5 generations removed from an Asian Leopard Cat parent. It’s wild to think these domesticated Bengals even exist, but their origin is even more wild.

WILD History

Being a hybrid breed, these majestic cats were engineered for a specific purpose. The first recorded cross between a domesticated cat and an Asian Leopard Cat was in 1963. The pioneer responsible for this breed’s emergence is Jean Mill, who wanted to reduce hunting for the fur and pet trade. She believed that if people could have domestic pets that looked like Asian Leopard Cats, they would not want to wear leopard cat fur, and fewer wild cats would be hunted for fur or exotic pets.

Twenty years later, in 1983, Mill was successful in getting the Bengal Cat recognized by The International Cat Association. She suggested that all breeders wait for a few generations before registering Bengal Cats with The International Cat Association to ensure that they were fully domesticated. Mill went on to promote the breed throughout her life and is acknowledged as the breed’s originator and increasing popularity of the breed. Without her efforts, we would not be able to enjoy these domesticated Bengals and their adorable features.

Pawsitively Adorable Kittens

It’s a common belief that domesticated cats don’t exert much energy. Household cats sleep an average of 12-16 hours a day, but the Bengal Cat is no ordinary feline. With their energetic personalities and need to stay active, Bengal Cats are always fun to be around!

So how can you meet a Bengal Cat in-person?

Book Your Bengal Cat and Kitten Interaction Today

Bengal Cats, although domesticated, can be expensive to own and maintain. Much like other engineered breeds, they can suffer an array of health conditions that can be costly to maintain. Adding in the excessive amount of activity this breed needs and the limitations on owning them, the Bengal Cat can be challenging to own.

But there is a solution! When you visit SeaQuest Littleton, Colorado, you will have the opportunity to see and interact with these spectacular cats! All you have to do is purchase admission tickets below, and you’ll have instant access to live Bengal Cats. We guarantee it to be a purr-fect experience.

Rescue a Friend for Life

We have built our company based on animal and environmental preservation. At SeaQuest, we care a great deal about our environment and the animals that call it home. Each year, millions of animals enter shelters around the world. This is why SeaQuest wants to encourage you to open your heart and adopt a companion animal today!

Pet Rescue: Adopt a Fur-ever Friend

We all love a cute puppy, but did you know that it is proven that owning a pet keeps you healthier and happier? It’s true! The unparalleled love of a pet can do more than just keep you company. There is actually scientific data that shows the physical and mental benefits to owning a fur-ever friend. Owning a pet is proven to keep you happier and healthier, so what are you waiting for?

Some of the benefits include:

Adopt, Don’t Shop

Every year over 6.5 million companion animals enter shelters nationwide, making the number of animals suffering from homelessness outnumber people five times. Most of these animals are either strays or have been surrendered by a family who could no longer maintain the pet.

Unfortunately, many of the animals that are rescued by shelters are not spayed or neutered, leading to overcrowding of shelters. Due to the overpopulation of the animals in shelters, 1.5 million are euthanized. Only one out of ten dogs born will find their forever home, but there is still hope.

Around 3.2 million shelter animals are adopted each year. Adopting a furry friend from your local shelter can provide a lucky pet with a forever home and potentially save their life.

SeaQuest Supporting Animal Adoption

At SeaQuest, we firmly believe in adopting pets from your local shelter. In fact, we adopt a large number of animals housed at SeaQuest! Rescued from dangerous environmental situations or just an owner who was unable to care for them, we have many SeaQuest friends who have found their fur-ever home with us.

Some of our SeaQuest friends that have found their home with us:

Toothless’ previous owners rescued him from a tank where larger fish had bitten off his tail and parts of his limbs. In March 2019, Toothless joined us at SeaQuest and loves to see visitors. Meet him at SeaQuest Littleton.

Loki joined SeaQuest in 2018 from the Arizona Herpetological Society, who rescued him from a previous owner who was unable to take care of him. Loki’s shell was mutilated from lack of sunlight and diet at his first home. When the Arizona Herpetological Society took him in, they replaced the affected shell portion with fiberglass. He now enjoys napping under his heaters and UVB lights at his home in SeaQuest Folsom.

Koka was a pet who had plucked out her feathers due to the stress of moving from home to home. In 2019, she moved into SeaQuest, Utah, where she is taken care of by SeaQuest’s bird husbandry team and consistent daily interactions.
